Saying Goodbye to Recurrent UTIs: The role of Vaginal Estrogen
Genitourinary syndrome of menopause is the most common cause of recurrent UTIs in women after menopause.
Recurrence can also occur due to other factors such as
- not completing your antibiotic course or
- not doing a urine culture to identify the antibiotic your infection is sensitive and
- anatomical causes
But if those are ruled out, its worth giving low dose vaginal estrogen a shot!
Remember, by not preventing recurrence you are exposing yourself to repeated doses of antibiotics which are wiping out your entire microbiome from your gut, vagina, mouth, etc every time you take them - and that can make you susceptible to other health conditions.
So, use the antibiotic when needed but prevent recurrence with vaginal estrogen.
