Silicon-based Personal Lubricants for Vaginal Dryness and Painful Intercourse at Perimenopause and Menopause: Pros and Cons
In continuation of my previous post on lubricants where I spoke about some of the problems with water-based lubricants, today, we'll look into silicone-based lubricants, which are
Usually more slippery
Last longer, and
Are usually non-irritating compared to water-based lubricants. This is because they don’t require glycols that are present in most water-based lubricants.
A fun fact about silicon-based lubricants is that they are also called "shower lubes" since they don't break down in water, ...but remember they can make the shower slippery!
The main downsides to silicone lubricants are
They can leave stains
There may be fewer options available
They are generally more expensive.
The other important thing about water and silicon-based lubricants is that they are usually latex-safe - so if you are in your perimenopausal years - remember you could still get pregnant - even though the chances are low - it can happen. Besides, protection against sexually transmitted infections or STIs is also crucial during this phase since the vaginal lining can be fragile and more susceptible to transmission of infections.
These 2 types (water and silicon-based) of lubricants are usually compatible with latex condoms as opposed to oil-based lubricants which aren't and which I will talk about in my next post.
