Belly Fat at Perimenopause and Menopause. What can we do about it?

HINGLISH TRANSLATION

Main perimenopausal hoon, aur mera pet jelly ki tarah ho raha hai. Kya exercise se mera body tighten hoga?

Yeh bilkul aam hai ki perimenopause ke dauran body composition mein badlaav aata hai, jisme tummy ke aas-paas zyada fat deposit hone lagta hai. Is samasya ke do pehlu hain - pehla hai visual, jo aapne bataya hai aur jo "jelly" feeling deta hai. Dusra hai ek gehra masla. Yeh body composition ka badlaav visceral fat ka indicator ho sakta hai, jo dil ki bimari aur diabetes se juda hai.

Achhi baat yeh hai ki isse jaanchne ke liye aapko koi fancy machine ki zaroorat nahi hai. Aap ghar par ek simple cheez kar sakte hain: apne waist ko sabse patle point par aur hips ko sabse wide point par measure karein, phir waist measurement ko hip measurement se divide karein. Aurton ke liye, healthy waist-to-hip ratio 0.85 ya…

Finding the Balance between Protein and Fiber / Fibre : Balance is Key at Menopause and Perimenopause

Striking a balance between your protein and fibre intake is key to staying healthy at perimenopause and menopause.

Some of the foods that are rich in protein, have little fiber. For eg eggs, milk and meat - have great protein but they have ZERO fiber.

But foods like lentils, chickpeas and beans are great sources of both - protein and fibre.

Fiber / Fibre at Menopause: Why and How much is enough?

Fiber supports almost every system of the human body and is even more important at menopause. Why? Because it can also help in regulating our hormones

and may even reduce some of the symptoms of menopause. PMID: 35983178

In general, 14 gm of fibre for every 1000 calories consumed per day is recommended. PMID: 35807822

So, if you consume 2000 calories, you need around 28 gm in the day.

Homework for you - Head on to google or any online calculator and look for the fiber content in

  • one cup of cut lettuce

Urinary Incontinence at Perimenopause and Menopause: Prevention and Treatment with Pelvic Floor Exercises (Kegel's)

TRANSCRIPT

Urine leakage or incontinence can start or worsen for some women at menopause. Often women will complain that a drop of urine used to leak out when I coughed or sneezed hard after I delivered my baby but since menopause, it leaks even when I am standing up or lifting light groceries. This is called stress urinary incontinence or SUI. You see, whenever there is an increase in our abdominal pressure, like when we sneeze, cough, or laugh, our pelvic muscles contract and prevent leakage of urine. And these muscles and the tissue surrounding them can get injured during childbirth giving rise to SUI after delivery which is mild for most women. But as you near menopause, the drop in estrogen levels results in the weakening of your pelvic muscles and they may no longer be able to control your bladder as they did before and women feel OMG…

Frequent UTIs

Hi, I am 48 years old and I have been having urine urgency symptoms for the past 5 months. I did get an episode of UTI too from which I just recovered. I have visited a gynaecologist and she suggested Evalon vaginal estrogen. She suggested once or twice a week, but I used it for 6 days continuously and post that I got a severe UTI. I am into menopause already cos I dint get my period for more than 3 years now. I want to be sexually active and also avoid having frequent UTIs. My cousin who is a nephrologist suggested that I use virgin coconut oil down there locally to avoid the dryness n UTIs. I am currently very confused as to which direction I should go. Btw I got my scans and all done and the reports are normal. Can you please suggest something that can hel…

Hello Kavita,

Thank you for your message.

Estrogen cream can take 3 months to make a change in your vaginal and urinary symptoms. In addition, estriol is a milder estrogen as compared to conjugated estrogen. You may find the post on ‘Practical tips on low dose Vaginal Estrogen’ in the Sexual Health category useful as guidance.

Coconut oil can be helpful for some but it doesn’t take care of the actual cause which is low estrogen levels. If I were you, I would give low dose vaginal estrogen a shot for at least 3 months making sure that I am using the right type and dose.

But remember, it’s use is recommended as an initial and maintenance dose.

Hope this helps

Frequent Urination during menopause

I am a 52 years old menopausal wome. I am not finding a way out of this problem of frequent urination. What should be the solution to frequent urination? As my estrogen levels became low ...I have started going to pee every hour... It's embarrassing during social gatherings plus it's inconvenient to self...which particular estrogen vaginal cream should I be using and how much?

It's very difficult to get this answer here in India as even the doctors are not fully educated on this topic ,I believe...I am highly frustrated... please help

Energy levels

I am 49. I have noticed that my energy levels have dipped from past 1 year. Feel tired all the time. No energy to exercise. I am going thru perimenopause. Periods are irregular. Muscle pain, knee pain...like when climbing staircase for a split second there is shock in knee cap which goes away on its own. Orthopaedic has mentioned not to sit in vajrasan, not to squat, not to sit in padmasan...all this is making me feel like senior citizen n helpless.

Hello Jasmine! Thank you for sharing your experience with energy levels. Lack of motivation, period irregularity, and muscle pains can all be symptoms of perimenopause. Ensuring that your baseline blood tests are in place is always a good idea to look for any obvious causes. And I am glad you had your knee checked out by an orthopedic. Building strength and motivation isn't something that happens in a day or even a month. It is always a work in progress. I like to use the "Start small and use small increment" policy. For eg, walk for 10 minutes and increase it only by 5 minutes every few days. I also find having an accountability partner useful - a friend, relative, or mobile application that will nudge me to move. We are planning to have a session with Life Coach @parul501 in the near future. She is the author of The Running Soul and has a lot to share about motivation and physical fitness.
