Personal Lubricants for Vaginal Dryness at Perimenopause and Menopause: Oil-based Lubricants and Summary

Coming to the last category of lubricants - the oil-based ones. Some of the problems with these include

  1. They leave stains

  2. They can erode latex. Remember, that I discussed in the previous post that pregnancies are rare at perimenopause BUT they can occur.

  3. In addition, the other ingredients you should beware of in oil-based lubricants are petroleum jelly aka Vaseline and mineral oil that are present in baby oil. Research indicates that women using products containing these substances have a more than doubled risk of certain vaginal infections.

Final Verdict on lubricants for vaginal dryness:

  1. Please read the ingredients before you insert them in your body.

  2. Avoid those with glycols or glycerine.

  3. Avoid the vaginal use of those that contain flavors because of their sugar content, warming properties, and parabens. Just because there currently isn't enough research out there to say that they won't damage the bacteria and lining of the vagina and won't make you more prone to infections in the future.

  4. Once you have checked all the boxes of excluding ingredients that can cause damage, the final choice of lubricant is a matter of personal preference.

BUT

Lubricants aren’t enough for many women at perimenopause and menopause, especially those who have symptoms other than painful sex. More information will follow soon…
